Ten Steps to Becoming a Locavore

Why eat local? When we buy our food from local farmers and other producers, we support the local economy. We don't like having our jobs outsourced, but is getting apples from New Zealand ok? Being able to shake the hand of the folks who created our food creates friendship and trust. The recent food safety concerns are extremely hard to trace in large scale processing systems. In addition, far less energy is used bringing your produce to market when it comes from nearby. Here are some suggested steps that I've used towards becoming a "locavore".

Swanton, OH- Through their Green Ribbon Land Stewards Program, the Nature Conservancy is encouraging landowners in or near the Oak Openings Region of Northwest Ohio to protect and restore the natural areas of their property. These individual backyards and vacant parcels add up to important acres for protecting water quality in the Maumee River and Lake Erie.

Toledo Choose Local - Non Profit - Eco Partner

The idea for Toledo Choose Local materialized on a trip to Ann Arbor to see how a similar organization was operating. Stacy Jurich, current Executive Director, and two other future board members who made the trip wanted a way to help small merchants.

Formed in August 2007, Toledo Choose Local strives to envision a vibrant, collaborative community where local businesses thrive and contribute to a healthy environment and the well being of all citizen.
