Lucas County Master Gardener Volunteer Program

Embedded on the sign is a pewter finger labyrinth to lead visitors through the paths of meditation.  This labyrinth design is called the Dancing WomanTM.  The symbolism of the Dancing Woman design includes outstretched and uplifted arms that both reach out in a welcoming, supportive embrace and reach up in celebration; wild and flowing hair suggesting natural freedom as well as the crazy and unexpected ways hair may grow back after chemotherapy; entrances under the arms reminiscent of a mother’s or friend’s support and protection (e.g. a mother bird hiding offspring under her wings, taking someone under your wing); flowing skirt and leaping movement in pure grace and beauty; path center located within a womb or birthing space, a place for transformation, rebirth; number of circuits 4/5 symbols of earth, creation/creativity and transformation/ regeneration; location of figure as if rising out of the labyrinth, a phoenix-like rising upward or, if turned downward, a re-birth from the womb-like shape of the labyrinth.

In addition to the garden signage is a sculpture designed by local artist Karlene Fredericks called Three Ribbons.  The sculpture includes pink, teal, and lavender ribbons to represent breast, ovarian, and all cancers.  Her artist statement for Three Ribbons is: Having your life touched by cancer is a life altering event and the inspiration for this piece.  The flowing ribbons symbolize the crossed ribbons used to represent each type of cancer.  The crystals represent tears that were shed.  The butterflies suggest the metamorphosis your life takes.  You are transformed, your life will not be the same, you will adjust.  You discover that you treasure each day and seldom take things in life for granted.  We need to celebrate the lives of those lost.  We need to treasure the moments we had together.  And remember, just as the ribbons dance in the wind, so shall you.

Master Gardener Volunteer Coordinator, Barb Northrup, states, “We designed and installed this garden as a sanctuary for others to stop by and visit.  We wanted to not only honor Linda, but anyone else whose life has been touched by cancer.  In order for this his garden to appear took the dedication and endurance of our volunteers and staff.”

The garden may be viewed at OSU Extension @ TBG at 5526 W. Bancroft, Toledo.
